CFP: Travellin’ Mama: Mothers, Mothering, and Travel

Demeter Press is seeking submissions for an edited collection entitled Travellin’ Mama: Mothers, Mothering and Travel

Editors: Charlotte Beyer, Janet MacLennan, Dorsía Smith Silva, and Marjorie Tesser

Deadline for Abstracts: April 30, 2016

This anthology will examine the diverse and complex experiences of motherhood and mothering from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective. We welcome submissions that explore how travelling influences the lives of mothers, especially in regard to cultural, political, historical, and economic factors. Further, we encourage writings that represent the relationships between mothering and travelling in a myriad of ways: mothers and their children; relationships of extended motherhood in various communities; perspectives of single mothers; and representations of motherhood from literary, biological, psychological, anthropological, sociological, criminological, socioeconomic, ethnic, and media perspectives. This incorporation of a variety of disciplines and methodologies will give insight into the issues on mothering within the context of travelling and provide a collection that recognizes the significance of mothering and travelling. The aim of this volume is to foster work on mothering that integrates the disciplines of feminist ideologies, literary criticism, and cultural analysis as well as represent the diversity of travelling. We hope to include a range of academic, narrative, and creative writing.

Topics may include (but are not limited to): Traveling with children/Leaving kids to travel; Expatriate mothers; Nomadic mothers; Immigration; Refugees; Different places, different mores; Modes of transportation; Regional delights—food, culture, music, scenery; Kerouac, Boxcar Bertha and me—freedom of the road; Touring—band, literary tour; Business travel; Rest stops, roadside joints, refreshment on the road; Detours, planned and unplanned; The saloon to skip—traveling safety, traveling in a woman’s body; The business trip; Educating children through travel; Interpreting other cultures for children when traveling; The pleasures/challenges of hotels; Going home; Transnationalism; Traveling and children’s language; Traveling mothers and online communities.
